Tega Cay is a planned city in York County, South Carolina, United States. The city is an affluent suburb of Charlotte, North Carolina and Rock Hill, South Carolina. The population was recorded at 7,621 from the US 2010 census.
The City of Tega Cay is located on a peninsula on Lake Wylie, which is twenty miles south of Uptown Charlotte and five miles north of Downtown Rock Hill. In 1970 the Ervin Company broke ground on 1,600 wooded acres of land on Lake Wylie previously owned by Duke Power Company. They named the area Tega Cay. The name Tega Cay is Polynesian for “Beautiful Peninsula.” The school district for Tega Cay is top rated.
