Located in the southern portion of the Piedmont region of North Carolina. Indian Train is situated astride US 74 and approximately 15 miles southeast of Charlotte in Union County. The town derived its name from the Native American path that wound through this area hence its name “Indian Trail”. The town has experienced a tremendous amount of growth since 1990- its residential population went from 1,942 in 1990 to 33,000 in 2010. The population is due to grow by 2020 to 40,000 residents. As a result of all this growth, the town has concentrated planning efforts to keep pace. The town adopted a long range land use plan, a new ordinance, and a pedestrian plan in recent years. We are also working on an updated master park plan for Crooked Creek Park and a bicycle plan. These projects are put to the test and will provide the framework to allow Indian Trail to grow wisely.
